Oh my goodness! How could I forget to blog The Tatton Family! They are some of my favorite people! Their oldest daughter was even my flower girl at my wedding 4 years ago! We went out to shoot some photos for their Christmas cards. It was stormy out, but nothing that we thought would stand in our way. As we drove downtown suddenly I-15 became a big white blur! I will admit. I was really, really nervous about this shoot. I was not on my A-game since I had, had the flu, and it was freezing cold! Wind chill and my dead brain were not going to be our friends. I was very pleasantly surprised! These two little boys were so awesome and patient! They were so cuddly and were pretty quick to do what I asked. They were a dream to work with! And so fun, too! Funny thing is that this is one of my top 5 favorite shoots, and there I was all nervous that I wasn't going to be able to deliver! I really hope Mom and Dad enjoy the photos we got!

I have known Tori for a few years now. When her mother told me that she had found someone to marry that was just perfect for her, I didn't realize how completely true that statement was. When I met Nate at their engagement session it just was perfect. The funny thing they have in common is that they don't particularly like to be the center of attention. We had to conquer this for their shoot, and I think they did wonderfully!! Especially since I had to tell them to get cozy in front of me! You may remember Gabbie from her family photos last fall. Kim came to me with such a great idea for her family photos. She wanted to include her parents and in-laws. The original plan was to also have Gabbie's great grandmother come along for a 4 generation photo. Unfortunately, great grandma passed away before we could get together. I was excited to meet her, too. She would have been the oldest person I have met at the ripe age of 99! Crazy! I'm sure she had such a fulfilling life. But my heart still goes out to their family. It's hard to lose a family member no matter what the age. I am so blessed to know that there is a life after this and that we can all be with our families again!

Sadie got baptized this month! Such a special time in an 8 year olds life! She was so excited to have her picture taken! We took her to her favorite temple. The Salt Lake City temple. Meet little miss Madelyn! Isn't she the sweetest little thing ever!? She slept like a dream unless I tried to manipulate her right arm. The left was perfectly fine! A Little Photo Lesson

So you got yourself a DSLR for Christmas, but have no clue how to use it. I've had a few people ask me how. I'll give you fair warning. I'm not a very good teacher. Serioulsy...I'm terrible. I am more hands on and have trouble conveying these kinds of thing through writing, but I'm going to give it a try!

You can certainly just use it on Auto. That's no big deal. Your photos still look much better with your new camera than your old point and shoot. But the only downfall to that is that your camera is making decisions for you. That means you are not getting what you paid for...sorry, but it's true. Some people think, "Oh, that's just photoshop." You may be surprised...let me demonstrate.

Here are my models Tessa and Marley. I bribed them with a bacon treat. There is no way they would just sit there like that for me. No way. If only the little kids were this easy...
First, we took a photo of them in Auto mode. In this SOOC {straight out of camera} image you may feel like it's a little drab and flat. Well, it is. The camera made the decision for me. It chose the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO (we'll talk about this soon).

I shot this next image in manual mode, which on your camera is the M on the setting dial. You can tell there is a significant difference in this image and the previous one. And no photoshop required! Bet you didn't realize the backdrop was green huh? That's because I told the camera how big my aperture should be and how fast to click the picture.

But of course when you have a session with me, I edit all your photos in Photoshop just to make the photo stand out a little more than before. I give it a little more dimension, and usually a color pop! My major rule of thumb though, would be to use Photoshop to enhance, not to fix. It takes up to five times longer to fix a photo, and still doesn't come out as great if you were to do it right the first time. When working, I find that a waste of my time, and more importantly, your money.

Okay...now that you can see the difference, I'm going to tell you how you make the difference!! Basically the biggest difference between the first two images is light, right? Lighting is KEY in taking any photo. So here we go! Let's talk about the two of the three main keys of light in photography!

Shutter speed represents the time that the shutter remains open when taking a photograph. The longer it's open, the more light you get to expose your photo.

Aperture is a hole or an opening through which the light travels through to expose your photo. Kinda like the pupils of your eyes. The smaller the number, the bigger the hole. And the bigger the whole more light that will pass through! This is also called an F-Stop. On your settings (when looking on your display) it's the number with an F in front of it.

We can talk about ISO a later day. It is very important in the triangle of exposure, but I don't want to overwhelm you! It can be pretty tricky at first. So we'll stick with the basics for now.

The aperture and shutter speed settings go in opposite directions, if you will. So, If you have a tiny opening (bigger number) for your aperture, you need to have the shutter open longer to allow the light to come in. If you have a large opening (smaller number) the shutter needs to only be open for a short amount of time.

moving from f16 to f8 is 2 stops brighter.
moving from f5.6 to f8 is 1 stop darker
moving from f4 to f2.8 is 1 stop brighter

The longer shutter speeds, like one second, give much more light to the film than a 1/1000 of a second exposure. So even though the number may look bigger, don't be deceived!

A half second exposure is 1 stop darker than a one second exposure.
A 1/125 exposure is 2 stops brighter than a 1/500 exposure.
A 1/1000 exposure is 3 stops darker than a 1/125 exposure.

Because F-stop and shutter are both measured in stops, it can be somewhat easy to keep them balanced. If you take away 3 stops from the aperture, you can give 3 stops back with the shutter. Essentially you could get the same exposure. If you shot a photo with an aperture at F2.8 and 1/250th of a second you could get the same results at an F11. You would just have to adjust the shutter speed to a 60th.

I know this is turning out to be a lot to take in...sorry. I would say the best way to learn would be to take the principles here and go try it out for yourself. The easiest way for me to learn was by trial and error...lots of errors.

If you find you can figure out one over the other, I would suggest to try using the "S" or "A" modes. These are Shutter Priority and Aperture Priority. From there you can set your shutter speed and the camera will choose your aperture and vice versa with the other mode. If all else fails you can always just go back to shooting in auto. But I highly recommend getting the biggest bang for your buck!

How cute are these two!? They have been married for 5 years and are aspiring photographers themselves! Kimberly is also a dancer....and it showed! They were both so natural in front of the camera, which is surprisingly hard when you are a photog yourself. I don't know how to explain it, but when you spend so much time behind the lens, it's quite hard to be in front of it. But the Bradburys had no problem!! And they did awesome!! I didn't really have to guide them too much, or tell them what to do! Take a look for yourself!

I can't believe it is already Christmas season! I love Thanksgiving and the opportunity to celebrate the things we are thankful for. Yesterday, one of my many thanks that I reflected on was to all of my clients and supporters that have helped my business take off! I believe another part of being thankful is showing your gratitude for your blessings. So to share my thanks, I am going to do another family session giveaway! But this one is a little different. Let me just tell you what a FUN family this is! Never a dull moment, and I loved every second of it! And I absolutely love that mom wanted to have a few with the girlfriends! So cool! You may notice another furry family member that you wouldn't typically see in a family photo. A little teddy bear. But this is a very special teddy bear that brought tears to my eyes. It represents a family member that has passed on just a few months shy of his 2nd birthday. As Jodi pulled out her grandson's bear, I could not help but feel overwhelmed with emotion for her and her family. I felt extremely touched by the love in Jodi's heart and how amazing it was that she implemented him in such an inspiring way. I feel the most important part of what I do is to capture a moment in time for families to cherish. I often find gratitude for having photos of my late father to share with my future children. For this I try to give back by helping others have those memories to share with their families and future posterity. This day, Jodi taught me a valuable lesson. A lesson of love and remembrance. Celebrate life. Sometimes we focus on the negative. That our loved ones are gone. But we need to remember how they touched our lives and celebrate them. They are still with us, just not the way we necessarily want them to be. Thank you Jodi!

Junes was a really fun month. I was able to do a few sessions for some old friends from high school. Amber is one of those friends, and I was so excited to do a session for her. Amber's husband has a birthday coming up here in July and she is making a surprise for him with photos of her and their three adorable children. Yes...her twins are only 6 months old! Do you remember Trent and Carlie? Well this is Carlie's immediate family! It was so fun to travel a tad south to their home on the farm! Reminds me of where I grew up in Star Valley. Makes me miss it a little...just a little. Carlie's sister, Tori, hasn't yet had the opportunity to become a mother like myself. I have turned that love towards my dogs for the time being, and I feel that she has done the same. Which makes me so sad to hear that their dog Charlie has cancer, and she may not make it to winter. I love being able to capture a moment in time for my clients, and especially when I know that a photo I take can bring great sentiment when that moment can become unreachable in this life. Charlie has the sweetest little personality, and I hope she can pull through!

Hello Jennilyn’s Readers!

We are the Davis family. Josh and I have been married for almost 6 years, and we have two beautiful little girls. Josh and I grew up together as neighbors and close friends. My husband has been one of my best friends since I was 4 years old. After being friends for 18 years, we started dating just after my kidney transplant in 2003, and got married a year later. Because of my history with kidney disease we didn’t know whether we would be able to have children, but somehow two little girls made it to us! They truly are our miracles! They were both born prematurely, and 8 months apart from each other. They have grown into beautiful and healthy little girls. We feel so very blessed to have them.

We are now embarking on a new adventure-the adventure of adoption. We are excited to accept a new little member into our family. We are searching for our child, and hope to find him/her soon. We have prayed long and hard about our family and we know that someone is missing, and possibly more than one “some ones” missing. This leaves us with the extraordinary blessing of being able to adopt. It is a trying, yet exciting adventure for us. We feel strongly that this is something the Spirit has prompted us to do. We look forward to adding on to our family through adoption.

We are very close to being approved for adoption through LDS Family Services, but in the mean time we have an adoption blog for those who are interested, or know someone who might be interested in placement. On our blog you can find out more about us, and who we are. We also have contact information for us, and our case worker through LDS Family Services. March Madness Model Search!

My Senior Model Search is now on! Call me crazy if you will, but I have decided that instead of looking at headshots and having a hard time deciding between models, I will just do this in a form of a fair giveaway! Yes you read correctly! A GIVEAWAY!! The main stipulation here is that you must do a better job than my husband here... not too hard.

So if you think that you can look at a camera, pose when asked, want free shots, and will be graduating in the year 2011 you qualify! This search (I mean giveaway...) will be open the entire month of March! I will be randomly choosing one boy and one girl to shoot in the month of June during summer break. Sessions will be held in the Salt Lake region. Models will receive their best images on disc, and will have the option to purchase products at a discounted rate. How awesome is that!? So I know that I don't typically write along with my blog because I like the pictures to tell the story, but I just can't help myself this time around. This was my first winter wedding, and boy was it an experience! I almost FROZE to death! When I pulled up to the temple it was 17 degrees! Plus the wind wanted to come out and play. Not fun...but yes of course I still thoroughly enjoyed myself! I love taking pictures that much! And it certainly helps when you have a handsome groom and an ASTONISHING bride! Poor Mandy didn't have a wedding coat, but she pulled through like a trooper. They are so much in love that the temperature didn't seem matter at all! I feel so lucky to be able to be a part of this special day! Congrats guys! Thank you so much! I hope you are having an enjoyable honeymoon! You deserve it!

Family Sessions

I do not set a limit on how many people you can have in your photos before I charge per person. I want to include everyone at the same price!

Single Family Session: $200

Extended Family Session: $300
Full shoot for Individual Families are only $75 each when you book your extended family! Must be done at same session for this price.

Plan on sessions lasting approximately an hour to an hour and a half depending on the size of your family.
Session includes the time and talent of the photographer on location and post production and a FREE CD! Prints, products, and packages are separately priced. Prints range from $5-$30.
